Safeguarding Your Child’s Future Through Juvenile Law

Safeguarding Your Child's Future Through Juvenile Law

Juvenile law consists of primarily of two areas:

  • Juvenile delinquency
  • Juvenile protection

The juvenile court also has jurisdiction over adoptions. William Casey Law Office, LLC, does not represent clients in adoption matters but has developed a list of trusted colleagues that clients can be referred to.

Juvenile delinquency is when a child is alleged to be delinquent. Most often this occurs because the child has been charged with a crime. For the most part, the same constitutional protections that are present in adult criminal proceedings are also present in juvenile proceedings.

Juvenile protection proceedings, sometimes known as “child in need of protective services” (CHIPS) proceedings, occur when there is an allegation that a child has been abused or neglected. The role of the juvenile court in this proceeding is to protect the child from abuse and neglect while at the same time educating and providing services to the child's family to prevent further abuse and neglect. The overwhelming consideration in juvenile protection matters is to return the child to his or her own family, if possible.
