Juvenile protection proceedings, sometimes known as “child in need of protective services” (CHIPS) proceedings, occur when there is an allegation that a child has been abused or neglected. The role of the juvenile court in this proceeding is to protect the child from abuse and neglect while at the same time educating and providing services to the child's family to prevent further abuse and neglect. The overwhelming consideration in juvenile protection matters is to return the child to his or her own family, if possible.
